Supporting Local Councils in Leicestershire & Rutland

Management of Memorials

Who is this course for?

This course is relevant for all councils that are responsible for managing a cemetery or burial ground. Ministry of Justice guidelines state that those responsible for managing burial grounds must have adequate systems in place to control the risks posed by unstable memorials to their employees, contractors, volunteers and members of the public using the cemetery. Councils will therefore need to demonstrate, as part of their risk assessment process, that adequate steps have been taken to mitigate the risks associated with unstable memorials and being able to demonstrate the provision of adequate memorial safety inspections is key to this.

This is a one day training workshop to train officers and operatives who will have the responsibility for the inspection and making safe of memorials. The day consists of a morning session dealing with the background, legislative/health and safety issues and all existing guidance available on this subject. The afternoon is a practical session based in a local cemetery (St Mary's Church, Church Lane, Anstey) which is a short walk from the training venue. This is an ideal opportunity for those authorities wishing to improve their memorial safety programme and the session will ensure that all delegates are suitably trained and competent in the work they are asked to carry out. ICCM Certificates of Attendance will be issued following the course.

Course Tutor

The course will be delivered by Martin Birch, Chairman of the Institute of Cemetery & Crematorium Management (ICCM). The ICCM is an accredited provider of education and training opportunities and an excellent source of policy and best practice guidance to Burial and Cremation authorities.
