The average band D council tax set by local authorities in England for 2018-19 is £1,671, an increase of £81 or 5.1% on last year's figure of £1,591. This includes the parish precepts and represents the highest council tax increase since the mid 2000s.

Having just returned from a meeting of Snarestone Parish Council in North West Leicestershire I am very pleased to report that with Snarestone's decision this evening to rejoin LRALC we now have all local councils in Leicestershire in membership.

The minimum contributions that employers and their staff pay into automatic enrolment workplace pension schemes are increasing. This includes local councils as employers where they have eligible staff (see NALC LTN 79 here for specific local councils advice).

As we always say in our well-attended and popular Councillor Training sessions, modern parish councils often encounter difficulties operating effectively within a framework of rather older (and dare we suggest outdated) legislation.
