Build a better budget: the importance of ensuring adequate training provision

The world of parish and town councils is ever changing, with councillors and clerks regularly being faced with new challenges and opportunities both at a national and local level. GDPR and the recent changes to the external audit process are but two recent examples.

At LRALC one of our key roles is to help your councils keep up-to-date with these changes and make the most of the opportunities that come your way. Our training and advice services are designed to provide vital opportunities for councillors and clerks to learn, develop professionally and build confidence.

It is therefore really important that as your council starts to assemble its budget for 2019-20, it makes adequate provision to accommodate training costs. For example, this is an ideal time for clerks to ask councillors to review our wide list of training courses (see here: and identify those that might be of interest so that all councillors have the opportunity to access the training they need to contribute proactively and confidently to council business.

Similarly, councils need to ensure that clerks are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to develop professionally. By engaging with quality training and the associated networking opportunities, clerks can develop confidence in key areas and be inspired and motivated to do more and, crucially, achieve more for their council.

By ensuring that your council's forthcoming budget includes adequate provision for training (and for associated travel/subsidence) your council is not only investing in its staff and councillors it is future-proofing the council and contributing positively to an increased professionalism in the local council sector.

For all training related enquiries, please contact the office on 0116 235 3800 or email us at We look forward to hearing from you.
