Leicestershire County Council Budget Webinar – Parish & Town Councils Friday 11th November 12.30 -1.30pm
The message below is from Cllr Nicholas Rushton, Leader of Leicestershire County Council. The Council is hosting a series of webinars to discuss the Council's financial situation.
We would encourage you to attend and promote the webinars most relevant to your area of work.
In September I drew your attention to our financial situation and the report that we had just published for the Council's Cabinet meeting on the 23rd https://politics.leics.gov.uk/ieListDocuments.aspx?MId=6776
As you know our financial situation is frightening and is worse than the years of austerity. We've lost £230m a year in spending power since 2010. We're very lean so it's not possible to balance the books without impacting front line services. We pride ourselves on doing the best we can with the money we have but we will have to make some tough decisions. Nothing is off the table.
While there are no proposals at this stage, the report illustrates the challenge ahead by providing an initial list of potential areas to investigate for possible service changes or reductions. This includes gritting, parks, bus subsidies, projects reducing smoking and supporting people to be healthier, Beaumanor Hall and planned big road schemes.
As the lowest funded county council, Leicestershire will always be sensitive to financial shocks. But the challenge currently being faced will put even the best funded local authorities under pressure.
I said then that the council would be engaging with stakeholders, and I write to invite you to promote, sign up for and attend one of the following webinars:
Tuesday 8th November 2pm-3pm targeted at Leicestershire businesses:
Friday 11th November 12.30 -1.30pm for Leicestershire Town and Parish Councils:
Tuesday 15th November 12.30-1.30pm for our partners in the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise Sector:
Wednesday 16th November 10-11am for all partners:
These sessions will be recorded and made available after all have taken place.
