Leicestershire County Council Election Purdah Period

The pre-election 'purdah' period for the Leicestershire County Council elections has now begun (as of 13th March). All parish and town councils in Leicestershire need to be aware of the rules around purdah. The briefing here provides guidance.

Purdah and the EU Referendum

A referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union will take place on Thursday, 23 June 2016.

The Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000 places restrictions on the material that local authorities and others can publish about the referendum. These restrictions apply for a period of 28 days before the referendum and become effective from Friday, 27 May 2016.

Elections 2015 - Statement of persons nominated published; will you have vacancies?

All election authorities have now published their "statement of persons nominated" which will tell all local councils whether they will be having elections, whether they will be quorate, and whether they will have vacancies, amongst other things, following 11th May (the day Councillors take office).

Guidance in the run up to the elections – the period of electoral purdah

As previously publicised, provisions of the Code of Recommended Practice on Local Authority Publicity 2011 apply to all town and parish councils.

During the run up to an election the Code contains relevant provisions which you need to be aware of paragraphs 33 – 35 (see below). This is often referred to as the "purdah" period and will start on 30 March 2015 and continue until the election.

National Voter Registration Day 2015 - 5th February 2015

"Bite The Ballot" created National Voter Registration Day (NVRD) as a response to the lack of education and awareness around voter registration in the UK.
