Fire Safety and Fire Marshal Training

Course Tutor:

The course will be delivered by Clear Councils Insurance Brokers who partner with NALC, County Associations and Local Councils to develop a risk management and insurance offering that is tailored to the needs of local councils.

Overview:

Many parish and town councils are responsible for fire safety both in the workplace and in premises that the council owns and manages. In practice this means that councils must:

1. Carry out and review fire risk assessments

2. Communicate with staff and others about identified risks

3. Put in place, and maintain, appropriate fire safety measures

4. Plan for an emergency

5. Provide staff with information, fire safety instruction and training

Government guidance states that the penalties for non-compliance with fire safety regulations can result in fines and even imprisonment.

Course outline:

In order to help our councils meet their obligations we are running a 2.5 hour course covering the following:

  • · Fire awareness including how a fire may start and spread
  • · How to react when a fire alarm sounds
  • · How to assess and manage a fire
  • · Recognising risks in the workplace.
  • · How fire and fumes spread
  • · Fire legislation
  • · Fire risk management and assessment
  • · Emergency plans and fire action including fire exits and fire safety signage
  • · Duties and responsibilities of employers, employees and fire marshals.
  • · Moving through smoke-filled areas
  • · Conducting an area/floor check – assembly points and roll calls.
  • · The fire triangle
  • · Fire risk control measures (active and passive)
  • · Reporting fire safety issues

Please note:

The session will also include training for Fire Marshals who have had little or no training or training that was longer than 3 years ago and some useful guidance for councils on dealing with the insurance and practical risks of fireworks and Bonfire Night.
